January 16, 2017

That’s the date set aside to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday, the birthday of a man who edified one of my favorite Scriptures.

Proverbs 31:8-9, “Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

Reverend King was a God-fearing man who loved the Lord and served Him by peacefully speaking up for those who couldn’t speak for themselves. I want my children to know about him and people like him. I want them to know that while there are injustices in the world, there are people who stand up and speak up to make a difference. I hope that by knowing about these people, they will be inspired to be one of them.

What a privilege to be in charge of their education, to make sure they learn about important people like Dr. King! As I have been gathering information and resources to share with my one-room classroom, I thought I’d share those resources with you.

Biography.com has a good biography of MLK Jr’s birthday along with several videos and a collection of photos from his life.

Vanessa at prekpages.com has a great list of children’s books about Dr. King.

This video about Dr. King from Kid President is pretty awesome. I enjoyed watching it and look forward to sharing it with my kids.

The Homeschool Mom has some lesson plans that I think we’ll use for our study.

Notebookingpages.com has a great selection of notebooking pages, and so does NotebookingNook.com.

Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech is available on You Tube.

I’m sure some of these titles will find their way into our book basket as well…
