TOS Review: Nature Nuts!

Photobucket
Photobucket We received Wise Alec Nature Nuts Travel Game & Expansion Set from Griddly Games to review for The Old Schoolhouse Review Crew. I wasn’t sure how well it would work for us since it is recommended for ages 8 and up. My kids are 14, 7 (almost 8), 6, 5, 4 and 2. I was pleased to realize I had no reason to be concerned at all! My little people asked to play this game every day for an entire week! Granted, the two-year-old only thought she was playing.

The objective of the game is to “become the Wise Alec!” You will need paper and something to write with to keep score. Players may choose to set a point goal or a time limit for the game at the beginning. We chose to play in 10 or 15 minute increments. Short play time seemed a good fit for the smaller guys’ attention spans, and it got REAL INTENSE as we got closer to time running out. Cards were read at lightning speed!

This is basically a trivia game designed for elementary students. Two to six players may play at one time. Rolling the colored die indicates whether the player is asked a question from “earth”, “plants” or “animals” categories. Each card contains two questions–an easy 3 point question for younger players and a harder 7 point question for older players. (To make this work for our younger kids, we made the questions multiple choice!)

To add fun and variety, there is also a stack of “wise alec” cards. A player gets a Wise Alec card when he rolls purple. The Wise Alec cards will challenge the players to do all sorts of fun things: “Action! Make the sound that a cat makes. +2 points” OR “Brain Teaser: Name 5 types of birds. +5 points” OR “Oops! You fed the raccoons! -2 points”

The game cards and die are contained in a small box with a magnetic closure, so we feel it would be great for travel. This set may also be added to the original Wise Alec Trivia board game. This set retails for $14.99 at Amazon. It is available at other online vendors as well as some brick & mortar stores. Two other expansion sets are available as well: Civilize This! (history) and Sports Buffs! (self-explanatory). Interested in adding this game to your family’s collection? A list of “where to buy” is located here.
